“Turn your air conditioner up to 26°C to save energy”, is what an article by the Courier Mail suggested. Said article created an uproar from locals, angry at the need to increase the temperature on their thermostat to ensure that the state didn’t run out of power.

While this practice will reduce the amount of electricity that you use, this could easily be swallowed up by other actions taken from being uncomfortable. It could cause us to turn on ceiling or pedestal fans to help circulate the air in the room. Or perhaps opening and closing the fridge door to get cool drinks or ice-blocks.

There are more practical actions you can take to save energy and reduce your power usage and cost.

1.    Seal windows and doorways

This is a relatively easy thing for anyone to do. Check your windows and doors and see if cold air is leaking through them. With your home cooled, walk outside and feel around the windows and doors. If you can feel cold air seeping through the gaps, then get these sealed up. Use a caulking gun, purchase some seals from your local hardware, or if on a budget, place a rolled-up towel at the base of the door. Do whatever you can to keep your cool air inside your home.

2.    Close the blinds or curtains

Heat transference through your glass will cause a room to heat up quickly. Invest in block out curtains or blinds on those windows or doors that receive the full impact from the sun. Keeping the curtains closed will help to keep your room cool.

3.    Plant a Garden

Shade creating trees and shrubs will impact the heat that transfers into your home. On a hot day in the park, we all make a beeline for a nice shady tree. Why, because it is cooler. It is the same for your home. A tree that shades your home will help to cool your home.

4.    Insulation

Insulation installed in your ceiling cavity will improve the temperature both in summer and winter in your home. It is believed that up to 25% of your cooling/heating is lost through the roof where no insulation is installed. A poorly insulated home will be unprotected from the soaring temperatures when the sun is beating down on the roof.

5.    Clean Your A/C Unit

When was the last time you had your unit professionally cleaned? Not just the cleaning of the easy to remove filters, a complete, comprehensive clean of the filters, coil, drain and condenser unit. Keeping your a/c unit well maintained and clean is essential to keeping your home cool in summer and warm in winter, without it costing you a fortune.

“The Department of the Environment and Energy agrees that regular and thorough cleaning improves the operating efficiency of household and commercial HVAC systems. This improvement in efficiency can translate into large savings for households and businesses on their electricity bills and help reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases from electricity generation. For these reasons, the department encourages consumers to establish a system for regular and thorough cleaning and maintenance of their HVAC systems.”

Each of the above steps can be completed relatively easily and will save you money. You will use less electricity to heat or cool your home. But, there is one step we want to highlight, the fifth point – Clean You’re A/C. We can prove to you that this single step will immediately save you energy.
