Heatstroke is hot just a Summer affliction, it can happen any time. It is a serious injury that can occur if body temperature rises to 40°C or higher.
Heatstroke is usually caused by prolonged exposure to physical exertion and/or high temperatures.
Signs of Heatstroke
- Dry Skin (lack of sweating)
- Rapid, Shallow Breathing
- Pupils Concentrated
Symptoms of Heatstroke
- Vertigo
- Confusion
- Headache
- Thirst
- Nausea or Vomiting
- Muscle cramps
- Fatigue
- Increased heart rate
- High fever
- Less frequent urination
- Seizures
Protect yourself and loved ones by staying hydrated, wear a hat and loose fitting clothing, stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, use air conditioners or fans and keep a close eye on children and the elderly.
If you think someone may be experiencing heatstroke, seek medical help. Call 000 and cool the overheated person while waiting for emergency services.
- Get the person into shade or indoors.
- Remove excess clothing.
- Cool them down, e.g. put in a cool bath of water or shower, spray with a garden hose, sponge with cool water, fan while misting with cool water, or place ice packs or cold, wet towels on the person’s head, neck, armpits and groin.
If your air conditioner does not appear to be operating as coolly as it should, it may need to be thoroughly cleaned internally.
