Protect Yourself from Heatstroke
Protect Yourself from Heatstroke.
Heatstroke is hot just a Summer affliction, it can happen any time. It is a serious injury that can occur if body temperature rises to 40°C or higher.
Heatstroke is usually caused by prolonged exposure to physical exertion and/or high temperatures.
Signs of Heatstroke
• Dry Skin (lack of sweating)
• Rapid, Shallow Breathing
• Pupils Concentrated
Symptoms of Heatstroke
• Vertigo
• Confusion
• Headache
• Thirst
• Nausea or Vomiting
• Muscle cramps
• Fatigue
• Increased heart rate
• High fever
• Less frequent urination
• Seizures
Protect yourself and loved ones by staying hydrated, wear a hat and loose fitting clothing, stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, use air conditioners or fans and keep a close eye on children and the elderly.
If you think someone may be experiencing heatstroke, seek medical help. Call 000 and cool the overheated person while waiting for emergency services.
• Get the person into shade or indoors.
• Remove excess clothing.
• Cool them down, e.g. put in a cool bath of water or shower, spray with a garden hose, sponge with cool water, fan while misting with cool water, or place ice packs or cold, wet towels on the person’s head, neck, armpits and groin.
If your air conditioner does not appear to be operating as coolly as it should, it may need to be thoroughly cleaned internally. Click “Learn more” to book a HydroKleen or call 1300 608 318
The Silent Killer
It is very important to know the signs of mould toxicity, to help you and your family stay healthy.
When you hear the word mould, the first thing you usually picture is dirty shower tiles or ceilings. However, this silent killer is everywhere and we’re ingesting and breathing it every day, without even knowing it.
Mould is not only the visible patches we can see growing in wet or damp areas of your home. Most of the mould is not visible. Undetected, it can grow under your floors, behind your walls, in your air conditioning system and even in your food. Mould likes damp and poorly ventilated spaces.
Usually, it starts with a small leak behind your shower or in your roof. Also, it appears in flooded places that have not been properly cleaned and in places such as dirty air conditioners. A highly contaminated air conditioner will need immediate replacement.
Airborne mould spores can be present in the air every day. Mould exposure shuts down your immune system and starts a cascade of diseases and conditions that can take months and even years to diagnose and cure.
Not all moulds are bad or toxic. However, there are some toxic and even lethal varieties called mycotoxins that are difficult, but not impossible to get rid of.
Mycotoxins contaminate everything around them, including air conditioners, furniture, curtains, carpet and even your clothes.
Once they enter your body, mycotoxins will… [click “learn more” for full article]
Geckos are the Air Conditioning scourge of the Sunshine Coast
Asian geckos cause hundreds of dollars’ worth of damage to air conditioners on a regular basis.
They often lay eggs in the drip tray, chew wiring and wee on controller boards both in the inside Head unit and the outside Condenser unit.
Unfortunately, many installations provide a gecko direct access to the inside units because the plumbing into the wall from outside to inside is rarely sealed properly.
To protect the inside Head unit from attack, use steel wool (preferably stainless-steel), to seal access into the wall from outside, as they cannot chew through it.
To protect the outside unit, place a container of moth balls (usually sold in plastic containers with breather holes in them), behind the base of the unit and under eaves if possible. This not only deters geckos but also rodents and even possums. Some of our clients are now using 6 to 8 moth ball stations around the perimeter of their homes as a general pest barrier.
If anyone has other tips for deterring geckos, especially for inside the home as moth balls are not too pleasant in confined areas, then please click “Learn more” to comment on this post.
A typical Head unit controller board is about $300 to $400 to repair and a Condenser unit controller board can be $600 to $800 to repair, if parts are even available.
If Geckos do not particularly bother or scare you, then the aforementioned dollar amounts may.
