Are You Protected?

When you think of air pollution, you picture smoggy, traffic filled streets and heavy industry pumping polluted smoke into the atmosphere.

What about your air conditioner?

The air in your home, gym, school or office can be full of health depleting and potentially life threatening airborne pathogens.

Indoor contaminants can be damaging to your lungs and the air conditioning system that you have in your home or business can harbour bacteria, dust mites, mould, animal faeces, pet dander, dead animals and many other dangerous pathogens.

Simply cleaning the filters once a month is a great start, but no where near sufficient to protect you and your loved ones.

By having your air conditioners professionally cleaned once every 6 months you are not only protecting the health of your family or business associates, you are also protecting yourself from a potential lawsuit. Cases have already been in court where clients or employees have sued due to becoming very ill due to poorly maintained air conditioners and these cases could have easily been avoided.

It doesn’t take long to have an industry professional thoroughly clean and sanitise your air conditioner and you can feel at complete ease with HydroKleen as we are the only air conditioning cleaning specialists that are exclusively approved by the National Asthma Council of Australia’s Sensitive Choice Program.

Give your Air Conditioner a Winter Health Check

Winter, the time of the year when we pack away our swimsuits and switch our air conditioning from cooling to heating to keeping us warm and cosy.

As always a little preventative maintenance can often save a lot of expense and inconvenience down the track.

After a Summer of heavy use, your filters may well have accumulated a lot of dust and contaminants, so it will pay to clean or replace them. Not only do clean filters ensure better air quality, they also allow your unit to run more efficiently.

According to Energy Star, you should clean or replace your filters every month, especially in peak times like Summer or Winter when your unit is working hard.

Then, head outside and clean your outdoor unit to remove any bird droppings, dead bugs, dirt and cobwebs. We also recommend keeping the unit clear of surrounding leaves, branches and grass.

Now, pick up the phone and call HydroKleen to book your professional clean and sanitise of the inside of your air conditioner. Not only will there be dust, bacteria, animal droppings, dead animals and pet dander, there can also be a dangerous growth of mould. This can cause many serious health issues for you and your family. By having your air conditioner professionally cleaned every 6 months, you are ensuring the health and well being of your family.

Is your Gym Air Conditioning a Nightmare?

Have you ever walked into a health club and almost made an abrupt about face because of the nasty air? Your gym or health club does not need to smell like your high school gym after a wrestling match or intense basketball game.

With proper air conditioning and gym ventilation you can remove unpleasant odours and provide your clients with the healthy environment they were looking for when they joined your club.

Healthy air is essential for a health club

Your clients choose your club because they want to improve their health or maintain it through exercise. As health-conscious individuals, they probably will not overlook poor indoor air quality. As one who owns or manages a health club or gym you want return customers and to grow your business. You certainly do not want to drive customers away because of poor indoor air quality and inadequate gym ventilation.

Poor indoor air quality and subpar gym ventilation does not promote good health

If your gym ventilation system has not been appropriately designed or is not functioning properly, the result could be a hot and humid environment because your system is not removing enough moisture from the air. Taking it a step further, let’s look at what can happen if you do not correct the gym ventilation problem that is causing uncomfortable conditions:

  • Humid air is the breeding ground for mould and mildew growth;
  • Viruses and bacteria thrive in humid air;
  • Humid air can cause musty smells;
  • Higher energy bills; and
  • Expensive system breakdown.

Insufficient gym ventilation: Beware of dangerous CO2 levels

In your gym, you have a facility full of people exhaling elevated amounts of carbon dioxide, which can cause a significant rise in carbon dioxide in the air. Humid air laden with CO2 will do nothing to promote the healthy atmosphere you want for your clients. If poor gym ventilation continues over an extended period, your customers could develop symptoms that are associated with poor indoor air quality when they visit your facility including:

  • Eye, nose throat and lung irritations – watery eyes, sneezing and coughing
  • Skin rashes
  • Infections
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Shortness of breath

Don’t lock bad air in your locker room

Locker rooms are a haven for moisture due to sweaty clients’ post-workout and showers being regularly used. Under the International Building Code, moist air is not permitted to be recirculated, which means it must be vented outside of the building. If you have a pool, sauna or steam room, this results in even higher levels of moisture levels in the air. It is critical that your gym ventilation provides an efficient exhaust system to vent the moisture from the building, reducing mould growth.

Does your air conditioner smell musty? Or can you see muck inside air conditioner?

The musty smell is created by the dust, bacteria, mould and mildew spores, leeching out of the air conditioner. This smell gets worse over time and is a sure sign the air coming from your air conditioner isn’t healthy.

Generally, people only take notice of their air conditioner when it doesn’t work as it’s supposed to. As part of your housekeeping routine, checking the air conditioner for dust, dirt, mould and mildew helps to prevent ongoing issues, plus, once cleaned, it’ll also help keep it running efficiently.

Mould growth illnesses can be serious, which is why we recommend a regular, professional HydroKleen clean of your air conditioner. Our team are highly-trained specialists, who understand that the health of you and your family is of the utmost importance.

Keep your air conditioner free of mould and reduce the risks of mould-related illnesses in your fitness centre.

Headline News on Mould in Your Air Conditioner

Last week, a news story caught our attention, with a Melbourne woman finding her mouldy air conditioner had a part in creating the chronic health problems she had developed. In short, the woman had moved into a brand-new apartment, then not long after, started developing skin lesions, then fatigue, brain fog and other issues, eventually diagnosed as an auto-immune disease. Mould is a silent and often hidden bio toxin.

After many years of investigations however, a mould expert and microbiologist found the apartment to have extremely high levels of mould where the air conditioner was pumping out. Mould is a bio toxin and can be deadly. This resulted in a new diagnosis of a condition called Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) otherwise known as toxic mould syndrome.

This woman is unfortunately a stark reminder of the reasons we believe a properly cleaned and sanitised air conditioner is so vital.

An air conditioner does not need to be old to grow mould. When in high use and not properly cleaned, it doesn’t take long for mould spores to develop. In this case, the apartment was new (as presumably, was the air conditioner). In a few short years, the mould spores coming from the air conditioner made the apartment virtually uninhabitable.

Although rare, mould related illnesses are reportedly on the rise and they’re tricky to identify. To reduce the chances of your air conditioner contributing to such an illness there’s a few things we recommend you review:

  1. Does your air conditioner smell musty?

The musty smell is created by the dust, bacteria, mould and mildew spores, leeching out of the air conditioner. This smell gets worse over time and is a sure sign the air coming from your air conditioner isn’t healthy.

  1. When did you last complete a visual check of your air conditioner?

Generally, people only take notice of their air conditioner when it doesn’t work as it’s supposed to. As part of your housekeeping routine, checking the air conditioner for dust, dirt, mould and mildew helps to prevent ongoing issues, plus, once cleaned, it’ll also help keep it running efficiently.

  1. Are you often sick?

As with the woman from Melbourne (although often not as severe), ongoing cold-like symptoms or skin irritations could be a sign that your air conditioner is desperate of a clean. Mould growth illnesses can be serious, which is why we recommend a regular, professional HydroKleen clean of your air conditioner. Our team are highly trained specialists, who understand that the health of you and your family is of the utmost importance. This also rings true for your business premises.
